Mmmm mmmm MMA good

Tonight I got the chance to see another installment of Showtime's Elite XC and wow what a hell of a night. Two KO's, Two submissions and one TKO. True, the broadcast team still sucks donkey dick but what you missed out on if you're not a MMA fan was the fight between Frank Shamrock & Cung Lee.

For some time now Frank had said he'd stand and trade with one of the best stand up strikers I've ever seen in a ring and I'm not touting Cung Lee because it's trendy, I'm giving props because this fucker can kick and punch solidly. It's not haymaker one punch KO power but it is widdling away at an opponent until there is nothing left except an empty shell of the fighter that started the fight off. Frank said he'd stand and stand he did and he ate I don't know how many solid roundhouse kicks, side kicks, chopping leg kicks, right hooks etc. And he wasn't knocked out. How'd he lose then? Well part of the game plan was taking Cung Lee's roundhouse kicks on his right arm and he did that perfectly. The problem though was that after enough hits, Cung Lee actually broke Shamrock's arm.

So why didn't Frank step to the left? Oh yeah, Lee has a hell of a right kick and a right hook to go with it. Why didn't he shoot and try for a takedown? Because he said he wouldn't and who knows if his knee is still busted. What you do need to know though are three things:

1. Cung Lee kicks hard. He broke a guy's arm and the feeling was reminescent of a boxing match of Miguel Cotto who got a KO win over an opponent by hammering left hooks to the guy's shoulder until he couldn't lift his right arm.

2. Shamrock is one tough son of a bitch. He ate everything Cung Lee could dish out and didn't get knocked out. Trust me, I've seen people take a punch, but Frank took upwards of three dozen KO blows and didn't crumble. It took a broken arm for the guy to say enough.

3. If there is a rematch and Frank says he'll stand up and trade even if it means losing again, don't miss the fight.

PS.: No one can make a bigger MMA match than Frank Shamrock... they filled out the HP Pavillion with tonight's card and it just seems as if MMA will continue to grow. We'll what happens and what Shamrock will do when and if he heals.
