A Sappy Story for the ladies out there.

I'm turning thirty... something this Sunday. I don't have any problems with it, honestly I am grateful for another year. How do they say? Older but wiser. Anyway, this will be a sappy story and I bet that men reading it will say... Bah. Women. But I know that some with a heart will find it... well, at least some of you will say: aaaaaaaaaw.

I have been reminiscing about all the good and the bad stuff that has happened to me over the years. And for some reason, I have this memory that is so cute, I decided to share. You see, a couple of years ago, I was having a bad day. It was my birthday and for some reason, nothing was going peachy. I thought... this day is going to suck.

Phone rings. A number that I don't know. Bullshit. Leave a message. I get the message back. I scream.

Wait. I have to go back in time.

When I was a teenager, I fell in love with my best friend from high school. I think I liked him ever since I was 5 years old. He was funny, intelligent and charming. They say that your first love you never forget, and it is true, I always remembered him with love. We got together in high school and, well, like everything else in life, you sometimes find that you grow and suddenly it doesn't work out. We split in a very friendly manner. We kept in touch but, again, sometimes you move on and you lose contact. I didn't hear about him for almost 15 years.

Sometimes when I was sad, or sometimes when whatever person I was dating was being an asshole, I remembered him and thought how great he treated me. I wondered. Does he still remember me? It wasn't like I thought about that all the time, just a couple of times during the year. I heard once that when you love people, really care and love them, you remember their faces and their voices perfectly. I usually smiled and thought, well, I remember you, I hope you remember me.

Anyways. Fast forward 15 years. Having a bad day. Phone rings. It's him on the answering machine! I dial back. You know the first thing I heard? "Hey hun. Today is your birthday. I just wanted to say hello and congratulate you." I was in shock. How did you find me? The following is the best part.

He said: I work in a legal office. I hunted you down using their tools (the first "stalking" I ever liked) almost a year ago. I got your phone... AND I WAITED FOR YOUR BIRTHDAY TO CALL YOU. Again, this lovely man waited for months so it was the perfect day to call me. What a class act.

The funny thing is that he didn't call me to hook up - and it didn't cross my mind anyway. This was a true friend who loved me and remembered me, and all he wanted was to say hello on a special day. He even remembered my birthday without Facebook or MySpace or whatever social networking tool that reminds you of your friend's bday. He just remembered.

Yes, we shared a deep love, but more than that, he was my first best friend in the whole wide world, and he didn't want another 15 years go by without catching up with me. What a perfect gift: to return a friendship that time had forgotten.

I will always remember that day. That's one present that I will never forget.
