Oh man. I've seen it a few times. See it "not sober," and you might actually catch all the allegory and symbolism. I mean, he gave the actors 'shrooms for some parts, and was on LSD for some of the time. Might as well parallel that, even with beer.
For something a little less...TOTALLYFUCKEDUP, check out "El Topo," by the same guy. Another total mindfuck.
