In a good economic environment, collections is probably a pretty tough job.

Given our current state of recession/depression, with no end in sight, I can't even imagine how hard it would be. (Assuming you have a soul and/or any kind of human compassion.)

I am sorry you had to go through this. I use to work at a collection agency (Lawyers) and just like you I was nice I was not nasty to the debtors. I figured they are already in a bad place and I won't help the situation. But, needless to say I worked for this agency that bought "old debt" so basically, these people didn't really owe the money to the institution since the debt was already over 7 years old.

Not sure how that legally worked but suffice it to say as soon as the debtor payed one dollar the account was active again. Make a long story short I was the top collector and I will assume it was because I was nice & I listened.

I finally couldn't do this anymore, day in & day out collecting thousands of dollars for people that didn't really care about helping these debtors with their credit but, rather lined their pockets by taking peoples last dollar.

There are many arguments on both sides of the fence... from they shouldn't have gotten into debt to they deserve it. Ultimately I contacted the FTC to ask them about the legalities of what I was doing.

Well they were very interested in what I had to say.
Eventually the lawyers I worked for were brought to justice and the "top" lawyer spent time behind bars. It was years later I heard that "top" lawyer was somewhere in Florida doing the same thing.

Morale of the story... You cannot stop big business from making money. They will do whatever they can to collect their money.

At least now I know my rights (if I am ever in default) & I always advise friends on how to handle debt collectors on the phone.
