2010 in music - Jack Johnson – To the Sea – B+

During the 2000’s, Jack Johnson has brought a whole new dimension to surf music showcasing a jazzy mellow folk sensibility that is hard not to at the very least tolerate. Simply put, I don’t know anyone who truly hates Jack’s music. For my part, I’m quite a fan since his modus operandi is admirable to the seventh level. A dedicated father, surfer, filmographer, musician who has always followed his heart and is pushing towards sustainability and true green efforts to not just become carbon neutral, but carbon deficient. If that isn’t a role model, I’m not sure what is.

What does that have to do with his 2010 album, To the Sea? Well quite simply that once again he’s gone through the route he thought best and did whatever put a smile on his soul, releasing a lively happy go lucky album that offers tracks to skip along to. Some people might criticize the album for a lack of more mellow numbers akin to what he’s released previously, but seriously, if you keep count, it’s not like the album is without its mellow gold. Only the Ocean, When I look up, My Little Girl, Turn your Love, and Anything but the Truth are all great mellow numbers that truly showcase that Jack loves to put out good slow songs for fans to enjoy. But if you’ve gone to a Jack Johnson concert, your only complaint is that his setlist was too mellow. This album offers up 13 tracks, and 8 of these are here to mix things up a bit. Apart from necessary to his repertoire, I think he also needed something with a little more movement in it to get fans moving during encores. At first look, you’d say there’s nothing stellar on this album, but there’s just something about Johnson’s ability to creep into your soul and make you say, what the heck and enjoy life, that every single album by the Hawaiian native should be bought and put in your pre or post surf catalogue. To the Sea is no different, it might take a listen or two, but if you’ve always loved Jack, there’s nothing on here that will change your opinion.

Highlight Tracks: You and your heart – To the sea – No good with faces – at or with me – Turn your Love – Pictures of People taking Pictures – Anything but the Truth – Only the Ocean
