Advertising tears never come from joy

I’ve noticed one thing in the last few months, quite a few people have let go of the waterworks at work due to stress, pressure or bringing home to work and vice versa.

I bring this topic up because I noticed that although mentioned indirectly, no one ever talks about this head on and I think it’s a definite area of concern. Trust me I’m pretty messed up in the head but I’ve never cried from a negative job experience and don’t go thinking it’s female exclusive. True I might have seen more women let loose but by no means does that mean that I haven’t seen guys in the same situation.

I’m not talking about when people leave a job and have that awkward farewell where they know that there’s no reason to not see each other regularly but that it rarely happens no matter how close you guys are. I’m talking about getting your ass chewed out, or not even than, getting lightly reprimanded for having noticeably screwed up. This just leads me to ask myself why that is? Is it as bad in other places as it is in advertising?

It’s not that everyone is crying all the time at work but I can’t say a month has passed by where I haven’t seen at least two people lose it for x or y reason and I can’t help but question if it’s the people or the industry. Hell I think there are a lot worse places to work at than advertising no matter if I genuinely think this industry sucks for however fun it can be at times. Yet I see people lose it and bawl, I’m talking genuinely bawl and weep because of something. I dunno, maybe I’m too observant and see what other people would rather turn their back on, but it is alarming because I sincerely think the world at large is just getting way too stressed and pissed off at existence. Maybe they need to find God, or Allah, or Buddha, or a nice escort service to free that pent up tension.

Hell, we constantly accuse ourselves of being drunkards in the industry and it just seems to be getting worse. I’m not talking about justifiable situations that push us to the edge of insanity, I’m just saying that some people are letting little nitty gritty things affect them to the point where I swear it seems like it wouldn’t take much to cajole a person into committing suicide.

Dunno, maybe it’s just a weird day and I wanted to bring a weird topic to the table. What do you guys think? Are we all mental or is it just Advertising people?
